Use case : detection of failures on cable-detachable fastening systems

Context

In the cable transport sector, detachable fastening systems play a crucial role to ensure the safety and efficiency of installations. These systems ensure the smooth operation of cabins, chairlifts and other suspended vehicles. They secure them to the rope, while allowing them to be detached when deeded. Our customer, a major player in this sector, called us to anticipate potential anomalies and optimize the maintenance of these systems. The aim was to respond to the increasing needs for reliability, while keeping operating costs under control.

Needs

The main challenge was to detect anomalies in fixing systems, essential elements in the safe operation of ropeway installations. These anomalies, often invisible to the naked eye, can be the result of phenomena such as wear and tear, micro-cracks, or unusually wide variations in operating conditions. If not detected and treated in time, they can develop into critical failures, risking the security of users and generating high costs for operators. To answer these challenges, the customer had many key requirements : 

  • First of all, they wanted to identify and accurately with accuracy risk areas in their facilities, using a solution capable of providing root cause analysis and reliable ;
  • Secondly, it was crucial for them to obtain actionable data that could be rapidly interpreted, so that they could plan maintenance operations more effectively, and anticipate problems rather than suffer them;
  • Finally one of their major objectives was to minimize unplanned service interruptions, which can disrupt operations, impact the user experience and result in substantial financial losses. This strategy was designed not only to guarantee maximum security, but also to optimize the overall performance of their infrastructures.

Solutions

DiagFit has been used for the construction of advanced predictive models. These models were designed to conduct root cause analysis on data from each individual measuring station and cabins. They specially take into account the constraints and critical variables of cable transport fixing systems such as frequency of use, load variations and environmental conditions.

Results

DiagFit enabled in-depth analysis and detection of faults on the data of our customer’s detachable fastening systems : 

  • Detecting faults : The station-based model enabled us to identify specific anomalies, such as offsets on certain sensors, highlighting dysfunctions invisible to the naked eye in the raw data. 
  • Health score : A global score and scores by station have been established, providing a clear view of the state of the installations.
